The results are powerful and impactful paintings ranging in theme from the photogenic to abstraction. His chosen substrates are canvas, YUPO paper, wood, and metal on which he affixes oil, acrylic, and ink along with the written word, coming together to create a unique, signature visual image.

Although today Hunter is considered a folk art legend, she lived in near poverty for her most of her life, and never travelled more than 100 miles from her home. She sometimes made money by charging people 25c for a tour of her home and the paintings she displayed there, or $1 for a photo with her.

She had two children with Charles Dupree, who died in 1914, and ten years later married Emmanuel Hunter, a woodchopper, with whom she had five children (two stillborn).

Entirely self-taught and immensely prolific, Clementine Hunter earned critical acclaim for thousands of vibrant paintings. Hunter, who labored her entire life on plantations in central Louisiana, began painting only in her late 50s.
